Project Oikos: Families of Hope

This is an effort to bring HIV/AIDS affected orphans in the Oyugis area of West Central Kenya, a life with some measure of hope by allowing them to continue to live in their own communities after their parents die.  This area has the highest rate of HIV/AIDS in the country, about 23%.  Many in their 20's and 30's succumb to the disease, leaving their children behind.  There are over one million orphans in Kenya, over 100 in this project have been identified. Some are absorbed into their families and communities and many other are left to fend for themselves.  Clusters of these orphans live together in small mud huts that are deteriorating.  They have no opportunity for education and carve out a meager existence under the direction of the oldest youngster in the group.  Through Oikos: Families of Hope, incentive is given to the families and villages where the children come from, to assimilate them into families where they grew up, and to empower the community to thrive.  Efforts have been met with open arms and shaped by the villagers.

Sponsorships provide a way for these orphans to receive help with housing, food, clothing, medicine, education, and involvement with the Christian community.  Work teams will provide the construction of more homes.  Teams will also bring medical and dental care, and bible camps to help encourage hope and growth in Christ.
